Zenit Group's ZM Mixers achieve ATEX (ATmosphere EXplosive) certification

news Zenit mixer ZM ATEX

By obtaining ATEX certification for the Mixer ZM series, the Zenit Group has completed its range of solutions for applications in potentially explosive environments.

The Zenit Group has completed its range of solutions for applications in potentially explosive environments by obtaining ATEX certification for its ZM Mixers, 50 and 60 Hz, which is in addition to that already achieved for the Uniqa and Grey submersible electric pumps.

The certification follows the European Directive 2014/34/EU and implements the new harmonised standards EN/ISO 80079-36 and 37, which introduce new procedures for assessing the conformity of non-electrical parts of equipment.
ATEX conformity certifies that the ZM series mixers in Ex version are designed and constructed taking into account the nature of each potential ignition source, electrical and non-electrical, to ensure a high level of protection (EPL Gb), i.e. to prevent ignition in potentially explosive atmospheres due to the presence of gases, vapours and mists, both during normal operation and in the event of reasonably foreseeable malfunctions.

To achieve these goals, it is necessary that the construction standards and materials used are of a high quality.

Zenit's ZM series mixers are characterised by the high efficiency of their IE3-class motors derived from Uniqa pumps, the robustness of their construction and their extraordinary versatility of installation.
The 50 Hz range consists of ZMD direct drive models, with motors from 0.75 to 4.5 kW with 4/6/8 poles and Ø 200/300/400 mm propellers, and ZMR reduced drive models, with motors from 4.0 to 7.5 kW with 4 poles and Ø 650 mm propellers.

The 60 Hz range consists of ZMD direct drive models, with motors from 1.1 to 4.5 kW with 4/6/8 poles and Ø 200/300/400 mm propellers, and ZMR reduced drive models, with motors from 4.0 to 7.5 kW with 4 poles and Ø 650 mm propellers.

The entire ZM mixer range in the Ex version now meets the safety standards and technical specifications required by the ATEX directives to prevent the risk of explosion.

Below are a few specific questions for Zenit's technical contacts, who have provided a precise and accurate scenario of the path taken by the Group to complete the range.

"When does the standard require the use of ATEX devices?”
Mr Fabio Locatelli (Pre-Post Sales Manager):
It is important to consult the specific regulations and directives relating to hazardous area classification and ATEX standards to ensure that the devices used comply with the safety requirements of a specific working environment. In particular, ZM Mixers are designed to mix liquids safely and efficiently, ensuring the safety of operators and the protection of the environment in industrial applications where there is a risk of explosions, such as the chemical, oil, pharmaceutical and food industries.

"What are the macro-differences between the ATEX certification of mixers and that of Uniqa submersible pumps?”
Mr Giuseppe Schepis (R&D Manager):
Uniqa series electric pumps in the WET version (for submerged installation) have the same level of protection as ZM series mixers (EPL Gb); Uniqa pumps in the DRY version (with motor cooling jacket), designed for dry chamber installations or where the motor casing is exposed, are also certified to ensure the same level of protection in potentially explosive atmospheres due to the presence of dust (EPL GB and EPL Db).

"Does an ATEX-certified mixer require more frequent maintenance than standard mixers?”
Mr Pietro Tallilli (Compliance Manager):
When working in potentially explosive atmospheres, it is essential to ensure that the protection levels of the equipment are maintained over time; this requires the user to plan an inspection and maintenance schedule in accordance with the instructions specified in the user manual accompanying the product.
Due to the higher severity of the safety risk, ATEX equipment requires an inspection plan with more frequent intervals than installations in ordinary environments.”

"What is the strategic importance of being able to offer a complete range of ATEX certified products?”
Mr Fabio Locatelli (Pre-Post Sales Manager):
Today's market is particularly demanding and requires not only a reliable, high-performance product, but also an unprecedented 'customer-oriented' approach, which translates into both technical compatibility between certain components to streamline installation and maintenance operations, and the possibility for the customer to have a single point of contact to assist in all phases of supply: from machine selection and advice during installation, to the availability of spare parts, and even a detailed scheduled maintenance plan.
It is with this in mind that Zenit has invested energy and resources to complete the ATEX range.
From the outset, the aim was to become a partner for its customers, supporting them in a complex environment where regulations are constantly evolving and therefore specific skills and products that guarantee high quality and construction standards are required. A context in which nothing can be left to chance and in which professional support can make a big difference.”
